The American State encompasses the territory that was called the American Union. It became the American State when the A.U. and the Global Union were merged.

The merger between the American Union and the Global Union began with economics, not politics. Shortly after General Lamson won the States War, he began working with Chancellor Cylis to unite the economies of the American and European Unions. As a result, Barrier Street in Beacon City became the economic center for half of the world. Roughly ten years later, the government of the American Union was merged with that of the Global Union, making the American Union one-half of the world-spanning G.U.
